Independent Living

The Independent Living Program (ILP) of United Cerebral Palsy of Southeastern Wisconsin (UCP-SEW) assists adults with cerebral palsy and other disabilities achieve more independent lives. The program is based on individual need and support given to the individual, and can vary from one time per week to intensive support in areas such as self-care, self-direction, budgeting and other independent living skills.
 

UCP STAFF HELP WITH FIVE ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS TO MAKE INDEPENDENT LIVING POSSIBLE:

  1. Locate Affordable, Accessible Housing

  2. Assist with recruiting and management of attendants and homemakers

  3. Participation in Employment/Day Services/Meaningful Activity

  4. Arrange Transportation

  5. Identify Financial Resources

United Cerebral Palsy staff trains participants in skills necessary to live independently and provides support as individuals develop coping skills through experiences previously denied them, using existing community resources to supplement training whenever possible.

ALL INDEPENDENT LIVING PROGRAMS EMPHASIZE:

  • Meeting needs based on consumer choice & normalization principles

  • Individual apartment settings versus group living

  • Location of apartments in typical neighborhoods

  • Maximum consumer control versus agency control

  • Use of generic community services versus specialized services.

ILP staff works within the community, as consultants to consumers, their families and various community groups and facilities to solve problems and increase knowledge and awareness regarding independent living.
